Burnley stand at the top of the football league after one game, merely because the table is organised alphabetically at this stage, when two teams have the same points. Yet that shouldn’t detract from the blistering start the Clarets got off to against idea less QPR. Clarets supreme Steve Cotterill has for the first time an actual squad at his disposal. For the past two seasons Cotterill has operated with the smallest squad in the Championship. This summer he’s managed to add four new faces while no-one has gone through the exit door. With the re-emergence of Micah Hyde as a born again midfield dynamo and the return from injury of Wayne Thomas and Danny Coyne, Burnley might be about to surprise a few people this season. They are almost every bookies favourites to be involved in a relegation dog fight but with the fire power on show last Saturday I see little chance of them being dragged down towards the basement. Andy Gray and Kyle Lafferty caused the Rangers back line numerous problems, both in the air and on the ground. The key to the victory though was the duel attacking midfield threat of Alan Mahon and Steve Jones. Mahon is inspirational at this level. He has the range of passing, trickery and confidence, to unlock any defence. While in Jones, Burnley have the complete attacking player. Pace is his biggest asset but he also has an eye for goal and an ability to create goals. He scored two on his debut and I expect plenty more where they came from. His first was a tap in but his second was quite simply sublime. With his back to goal he swivelled, knocked it past one man and fired a left foot pile driver into the top corner. After this performance I wouldn’t bet against the Clarets reaching the play-offs, then again I’m sure a few other clubs would have something to say about that.
