As I suspected all along my favourite Arsenal reject, Sol Campbell, is on his way to Fratton Park to join the Harry Redknapp revolution. He just has to complete his medical and it’s a done deal. I wasn’t surprised that none of the big clubs were willing to sign Sol if last seasons showing is anything to go by. He definitely seems to have lost his pace. Which was always one of his major assets. Pound for pound he has been the best English defender of the last 10 years. He reads the game really well and really is a brick wall of a man to get past for any striker. I hope it was a lack of match fitness that led to him looking slow at times last year because if he can’t find some of that lost speed he really will struggle for Portsmouth. Saying that he can be a real influence around the club. He’s seen and done it all. He can help bring the less experienced players on. I think Redknapp will get Pompey to a mid-table finish and possibly a cup final. They just need to add a few more bodies. I think the key problem is that they have the funds to spend but can’t attract the players. The training facilities are poor, the ground is shambolic and the kit is dreadful. But it’s a real football club, and I wish Pompey all the best for the new season.
