Good news for football fans around the world as Sir Bobby Robson was released from hospital today. I imagine the emotion of the day might have got to Bobby on Saturday after being rewarded for his services to Ipswich by being made life president. After just recovering from cancer and being in his seventies the former England man was probably in no condition for such an overwhelming experience. When I initially saw the news that he’d been taken to hospital I really did fear the worst. So many brilliant former managers have been taken in recent years, yet if Bobby was to go it would be the saddest. He has given so much to world football. His Ipswich side won the Uefa Cup, then he’s managed at PSV, Barcelona and Porto. Yet it is the memories of Italia 90’ that linger largest in the mind. It helps that I watched the highlights video of England’s campaign the other day. It really is startling how much better the 1990 side were than this current team. They literally took sides apart. A real team, with flair as well as a solid back bone. We have to thank Bobby for that. It’s just a shame that such a talented manager never captured the biggest prize, or even the English league title. Still, you never know he might win the World Cup with Steve Staunton’s Irish side. Surely that would be a dream too far, but in Sir Bobby Robsons case, nothing is impossible.
