Arsene Wenger isn’t too happy about Sol Campbell’s move to Fratton Park. He happily let big Sol leave because he wanted to try playing in another country but is surprised that the centre-back has now opted to stay in the British Isles.

Campbell, 31, was linked with a switch to Marseille after deciding to quit the Gunners.

But he is on the verge of joining Portsmouth after agreeing a one-year £50,000-a-week deal, with an option for another year, after passing a medical.

The move, though, has angered his old Arsenal boss Wenger. He said: "It’s a big surprise to me because he cancelled his contract to go abroad. Has Portsmouth suddenly been sold to a foreign country?"

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp said: "We’ve been talking to Sol.

"Hopefully he’ll join. It’s not done yet, but hopefully it will be."

Wenger stood by ex- England star Campbell when he suffered depression in February and his career took a massive nosedive.

Campbell famously walked out of a match against West Ham at half-time after gifting the visitors two goals.

Wenger finally agreed to let Campbell walk out on his £60,000-a- week Arsenal contract, with the player picking up a £1million pay-off to remove him from the heavy wage bill.

As for Pompey, they hope Campbell will be the first of four signings this week with Manchester City pair Sylvain Distin and David James plus free agent and ex-Arsenal striker Kanu all set to follow.
