Mick Macarthy managed to get his first win as Wolves boss but it could have been so different as Carl Court was sent off to reduce his side to ten men in the first half.
Wolves created plenty of chances before Jay Bothroyd rifled home a stunning shot from all of 30 yards midway through the first half.
Cort's red card for catching Gavin Williams with a stray hand before the break should have helped Ipswich. They should have drawn level when Jody Craddock tripped Nicky Forster in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. But Wolves keeper Matt Murray saved from Matt Richards' penalty and Marcarthy’s men hung on for the three points. The managers had this to say:
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"It's doing us a disservice to say it was a battling performance.
"It turned out to be that but I thought in the first half we played some terrific stuff and we were considerably the better side.
"But it was a battling performance in the second half."
Ipswich Town boss Jim Magilton was unhappy that referee Trevor Kettle disallowed a Dean Bowditch goal for offside in the second half:
"It deflected off their defender, hit the inside of the post, Deano was alive and put it in but I've no idea why it was ruled out," he said.
"We just didn't do enough. We gave them simple instructions to keep the ball moving and we didn't carry it out.
"It's not rocket science. We had a penalty, which was a lifeline."
