It's a three horse race as far as I can see. I've picked my winner but it wasn't an easy decision.
The day is almost upon us when new England boss Steve Mclaren will name his backroom staff and captain. The worst kept secret in football is that El Tel will be his assistant, a move that I’m sure all English fans will be happy with. The only concern is whether or not Terry Venables can actually be an assistant. At the end of the day he’s a leader, he knows the game inside out and I struggle to see how he will play second fiddle to a younger less experienced man. Yet that’s for Steve and Terry to sort out. At the end of the day having a footballing brain like Venables on board has far more positives then negatives. The other big decision to be announce at 3:00pm on Friday is the new captain of the England National team. It’s a very tough decision to make with 3 candidates who I feel would be equally capable of doing the job. First up is Gary Neville. What a player, what an England career. He’s done it all since making his debut before Euro 96’. Neville is both a leader on the pitch, a man who never ducks out of a challenge and fights right till the end. But he is also a voice in the changing room. He has the experience to really help all the members of the squad realize what it means to have the three Lions on their chests. This experience could though count against him in the long run. He might not be around for the next World Cup and with Mclaren looking to start a new regime Neville will probably miss out. Next up is John Terry. A brilliant player, but more than anything a real war horse of a man. Nothing would ever stop John winning the ball, he’d run through a brick wall for the team. He reminds me very much of Bryan Robson or Terry Butcher in his desire to win. He’s a great organiser and very vocal on the training ground. He also has experience of winning championships as a captain. There aren’t really any negative things you can say about him, he would be ideal. The problem is that there is one man who I believe has everything and a bit more. Steve Gerrard could quite possibly become the best midfielder in the world over the next two years. He has in the last few seasons dragged Liverpool forward by inspiring his players to never give in until the final whistle. He is the complete player. Whether it be as a ball winner, a creator or goal scorer, Gerrard can do everything. There can be no more inspirational player to lead England forward into a new dawn. Imagine looking around the pitch and seeing that this man is your leader. We’d be unstoppable.
