Graham Taylor has told the Sun newspaper that he belives Martin O’Neill will turn Aston Villa into an English superpower.
And the former Villa and England boss even tips Maverick Martin for a top-three finish this season. I’m not so sure myself seen as though he hasn’t made any signings as of yet, but who knows.
Taylor said: "I cannot see why, if they get things right off the pitch, Villa can’t challenge for a top-three place every year.
"I think that’s what attracted Martin to the job. Of course, he could even achieve that in his first year and that would be fantastic.
"But he has time to build the club and will relish the challenge.
"He’s the sort of manager who will stay at a club for four or five years and not cut and run after one bad year. Villa need that stability.
"The important thing wasn’t that Villa picked him but that he picked Villa. That will make a massive difference.
"That might surprise people but, if you look at it realistically, he wasn’t going to get any of the top four jobs." (The Sun)
Taylor says the former Celtic chief will get the best out of his players, which is definitely something I’d agree with. Martin’s greatest skill is his man management. He just needs some striking talent to score the goals. In defence the team are pretty solid, with young superstar Gary Cahill set to be an England player within the next 2 years. There is a definite lack of creativity in the side but I’m sure that can be rectified in the not too distant future.
